After their home was destroyed, Asma and her family were forced to flee Syria and move to Jordan. While dealing with the trauma of seeing their home become a war zone, Asma and her husband persevered. With training and small start-up grant, NEF has been able to help them pay down their debt and become financially stable during this difficult time.

Hanan is a 45-year-old Jordanian woman who sells hand woven goods to earn supplemental income to support her 18-year-old son. This is a worthy achievement in its own right, made that much more notable when considering that Hanan lost her sight when she was just 28 years-old. In recent years, Hanan has pursued a new chapter and become a skilled weaver. And with NEF’s assistance, she turned what was once a hobby into a way to generate income.

Qaiser is 41 years-old, a husband and father of four, who moved his family to Jordan from Iraq in 2013 after violence erupted in his home of Baghdad. Finding work where he can, he has also started a small business producing honey with training and a cash grant from NEF which he says has raised his morale and the morale of his family.

Micro and small enterprises play a central role in Morocco’s economy, but youth face a number of challenges in entrepreneurship, including: the absence of a strong entrepreneurial culture; a lack of access to credit; lack of access to networks; low risk tolerance by both youth and financial stakeholders; and a lack of personalized coaching and support. The Empowering Youth through Entrepreneurship in Morocco (EYEM) project aims to fill this gap by providing training in entrepreneurship, business incubator support, and start-up grants to give young entrepreneurs (50 percent women) the tools they need to turn their ideas into profitable and sustainable businesses that are market oriented and scalable. EYEM is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) and implemented by the Near East Foundation (NEF) in partnership with the Moroccan Association for the Support and Promotion of Small Businesses (AMAPPE), the Moroccan Social Solidarity Economy Network (REMESS), and alAmana Microfinance.

Event Production

I planned, sought out sponsors, and executed the Near East Foundation’s Centennial Gala Celebration held on Wednesday, October 28, 2015, at the beautifully restored Cipriani 25 Broadway in Manhattan.

The event marked 100 years of NEF’s pioneering work in the Middle East and Africa. In commemorating the foundation’s history, NEF paid tribute to the many individuals who have contributed to its legacy. One of the more moving parts of the evening occurred when descendants of Armenian genocide survivors presented a recreation of the NEF Workers’ medal to the descendants of NEF founders and relief workers who responded to the early calls to action surrounding the Armenian genocide.
